Treehouse Playground

Project Type

Playground, Treehouse, Children

Date

December 2023

The background to this project is the research of The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch, a reinvented interpretation of Eden. I researched the significance of the painting and two of its key aspects, allegory, and triptychs. I extracted certain symbols from the central panel painting for allegory and found alternative allegorical meanings. For triptychs, I looked at the meaning and created 1:20 scale triptych models which I manoeuvred together to create interesting shapes and shadows, sparking a conversation with my design concept.
I took my allegorical and triptych research on HB and combined it with the site. I looked at allegorical symbols on site, one of which was the trees. I created new allegorical meanings of trees, one significant one being shelter. Trees provide shelter. And so, I came up with a treehouse that would provide shelter and an inhabitation space for children. Combined with the unappreciated green spaces, It was the perfect backdrop to create an impact to the site and my client.

Inside the installation will be 4 key spaces. The key spaces represent one of the 4 seasons. Each space has its own allegorical interpretation derived with the help of placement, weather conditions, tree location and scale to narrate each season. I used the seasons attributes to select spaces for children that will strengthen their relationship to nature and the environment. All seasons will be tied together with play area equipment such as ladders, poles, tunnels etc. to allow the child to explore the treehouse in their own way and give opportunities for children to connect to nature.
